If you’re in the process of buying a new home, it’s time to start thinking about the fun stuff – moving! Okay, so perhaps it’s not actually at the top of your ‘fun’ list, but it’s a necessary evil and one that will certainly be rewarding. Whether you’re hiring movers or planning to tackle it all on your own, there are some tips and tricks to make your life easier as you jump into the moving process. Read on for the details you need to know!

1. Clear the Clutter

One of the best things you can do when preparing to move is to declutter before starting the packing process. After all, there’s no need to pack and move items that you won’t use again! If it’s something of value, you can list it on Facebook Marketplace or have a garage sale; otherwise, schedule a donation pickup directly at your home – no need to drive all over town!

2. Reserve a Moving Truck (or Moving Company)

Whether you’re handling the move on your own or hiring a helping hand, the earlier you reserve a truck or movers, the better. Typically, you’ll have a finite amount of time to pack and move, so it’s important to have everything lined up to move out on time.

3. Schedule Utilities Ahead of Time

You’ll want to have utilities cut off or transferred out of your name in your current home to prevent charges from accruing after you move out. Don’t forget to also schedule utilities to be transferred to your name at your new place, too. There’s nothing worse than arriving at your new home with no electricity or water – always stay on top of critical steps like this to keep your move running smoothly!

4. Obtain Plenty of Boxes

You’ll notice it says ‘obtain’ and not ‘buy’ – often, you can scour Facebook Marketplace or local stores for free cardboard boxes. This can save you a pretty penny since the moving process can get pricey! If you do opt for purchasing boxes, your local hardware store should have multiple sizes available. It’s a good idea to have more than you need, just in case – most stores will allow you to return them, and if not, you can most certainly find someone that needs them.

5. Label Boxes by Room

When you begin packing (or if you hire packers to assist), label all boxes according to the room in which they belong. This will make moving into your new home and unpacking a breeze since boxes will be in the correct space from the start. No more searching top and bottom for that box of kitchen tools you need!

6. Pack a Suitcase with Essentials

This brings us to the next tip – pack a small suitcase with essentials, like a few changes of clothing, pajamas, toiletries, sheets for your beds, etc. That way, on your first few nights in your new place, you won’t be digging through boxes or needing to unpack every single thing to settle in.
